JACK DEMPSEY grew up in Stoneham, Massachusetts, on the North Shore of Boston. After his B.A. in English at University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1979, he began writing professionally in New York City, and for many publishers there he researched, wrote and edited numerous books in Composition and Grammar, Literature, Criticism and Social Studies. After several 1980s research-trips to The Greek Islands, he took up 2 years' residence in Crete and completed a 2000-page manuscript about "Minoan" Crete that, in 1996, became the 679-page Ariadne's Brother; and he has lectured and published on related subjects in both Greece and the United States.

Dempsey took his Ph.D. in Early American and Native American Studies from Brown University in 1998, and has taught English, Cultural Studies and Public Speaking there, at Wheaton College (Mass.) and Bentley College. He has also produced two documentary-films on New England subjects as well as books, critical articles and conference-papers in the field. (See the Early America side of this website.)

Most recently, Dempsey has produced a 25-hour audio/video-tape archive that preserves the works of the late Native New England historian Nanepashemet (at Phillips Academy's R. S. Peabody Museum of the American Indian, Andover MA). In May 2002 he brought together many performers, historians, Native and other community people to produce Revels 375, a public historical event at Maypole Park in Quincy, Mass., celebrating that anniversary of the "Merrymount" colony and including his performance as "Master of the Revels," English colonist Thomas Morton. As a consultant, he is designing a new permanent multimedia exhibit at Quincy Historical Society, and he has shared in the building of new curricula at many levels of public and private education. His latest projects include a screenplay, Merrymount: a true adventure comedy, and a sequel to Ariadne's Brother called People of the Sea: A Novel of The Promised Land.
